Tequila, Vodka, Sake, Wine, Beer; about any alcohol you can name conjures up a vision of a country somewhere in the world most associated with that drink. We are a planet of social drinkers. In the USA according to the 2002 Census, there were over 128,000 dedicated drinking establishments that served alcohol to patrons. Alcohol is also served at restaurants, night clubs and sporting venues and sold in stores throughout the nation for consumption at home.
Alcohol plays a central role at important occasions throughout society. We toast newlyweds with alcohol at weddings. We raise glasses of alcohol to remember old friends. Alcohol enhances meals. It breaks the ice at parties and helps us usher in the New Year. Alcohol is used in religious ceremonies. We even use alcohol to launch ships.
As commonplace as alcohol may be throughout our culture, it is important to appreciate the fact that alcohol is a drug that can easily be abused. Heavy binge drinking is a problem identified in every segment of society but it is heaviest among 18 to 25 year olds. Some college surveys suggest that about 20 percent of students consume five or more drinks per sitting at least once a week. Other reports suggest that approximately 40 percent of collegians consume this amount of alcohol at least once every two weeks.
Alcohol's impact doesn't cease at graduation. In the United States, absenteeism from work and poor job performance related to alcohol cost $148 billion annually. This translates to an average annual cost per working adult of $2000. The costs of alcohol-related accidents and deaths are incalculable.
The Cure is designed to help individuals avert the ill effects of hangovers. It is intended to help people recuperate from intoxication so that they can perform to their fullest capabilities in the classroom or on the job the next day. Although The Cure removes one of the consequences of intoxication, it by no means removes all consequences, most of which can be far more severe than a morning-after hangover.
For this reason, it is important for us to emphasize the following: The Cure neither prevents nor lessens intoxication. It does not help people sober up or avoid all of the legal, moral and health-related dangers that arise when too much alcohol is consumed. It does not protect against the long term effects of chronic alcohol consumption which are known to cause damage to multiple organs throughout the body. Your actions and your thinking are impaired when you drink alcohol and the consequences of one intoxicated moment can last a lifetime. Alcohol and The Cure are not intended for use by minors. Whenever you drink, make a deal with yourself before you begin drinking. If you drink, drink responsibly. If you drink, do not drive. Help rid society of the ill effects associated with alcohol. If you drink, be a part of the cure.
